If they are caught actually committing the crime, then the game is over in the first act. The problem is: determining whodunnit will be based on the investigation, mostly. I'm not sure when murdering someone is ever logical unless it's in self defense, so how can someone come to a conclusion that this motive works when another doesn't? So thats where my problem comes up. It seems like a waste of time to go down that route to me. So I don't know how you determine who has the "best" motive for killing someone. I've written this sort of thing into the story though, but basically, they all have a motive. While most of the players will be able to do this sort of "social" deduction, some of the players are younger and I don't think it will be very fun for them. I purchased a book to help me design the game, but it's giving me advice about finding out the murderer based on investigation + social cues/motives to determine who had opportunity and the best motive. If the murderer is able to not get caught at the end of the game they will get a prize, or whoever solves the mystery will get a prize. Along with some red herrings here and there, of course. A player will discover the body along with the clues for the investigation in that room already laid out the day before, directing players into other rooms of the house with clues hidden in there. The way I have written it so far is that one of the guests won't know they are the murder until they end up in the room where the murder occurs, after they've followed my objectives to get the weapon and go to the room where they find out they are the murder and their objective from then on is to not get caught.

I have changed the story from the film, so it's not so obvious and there are extra characters.

The Clue movie has a dinner scene and I wrote this scene into the game. I have rented an older historical mansion that has a good clue feel for it to play this game/party and plan on serving dinner during the game. All based on the film, except extra characters I wrote into the game based off characters from the board game. Everyone seems to want to arrive in costume so I went with it. I have already sent out the invitations with the characters and their bios and what to wear.

It started out as purely a murder mystery dinner party, but I'm having so much trouble with the stress of having the murder play out and so many chances of failure I wanted to add a more escape room style/puzzle/scavenger hunt arm to the party in case the mystery is solved in the first act, and it might be more fun anyway? I don't know. I am working on a "Clue" Movie based birthday party for my soon to be 13 year old daughter.
